Adrenal Fatigue and How It Might Be Holding You Back

Do you suffer from any of these?

  • Insomnia (Wake up feeling exhausted?)
    • Fatigue (midday crashes after lunch?)
    • Achy (Muscles /bones ache)
    • Brain Fog (Struggle to focus/ learn)
    • Get agitated quickly (short fuse)
    • Struggle to get enough oxygen in (having to take deeper breathes sometimes)
    • Dizzy when you stand up
    • Struggle to lose weight (especially Belly Fat)

If you answered yes to a few of these then you may be suffering from Adrenal Fatigue.

P.S I don’t mean just a one off day with some of these symptoms, I mean on a regular basis! Everyone has a bad day!

Your adrenal gland are found at the top of the Kidneys. They are responsible for coping with Stress. A survival hormone if you will. They help the body adapt to stress.

Example- Gravity stress (no I don’t mean when you are out in outer space) when you stand up. When you stand up blood pressure has to increase in order to get blood to your brain. If it didn’t you would black out! Hence why people who get light headed often are not getting proper blood flow to their brain. This could well be an Adrenal problem! NAAAT GOOD!

The Adrenal also produces a variety or hormones and steroids such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol (very important will come to later). The adrenals are part of the sympathetic nervous system, also known as fight or flight response. E.g this will take place if a lion was chasing you to eat you or maybe if you were starving and the waitress dropped your food! Not funny I know…

A lot of these stresses don’t take place in human lives anymore, except maybe the waitress/waiter situation! I would probably slay the poor person if that was me! Kidding… not really! However I am rambling, you see the stress that the adrenals adapt too is not just physical, you probably understand that it is mental too! The news, losses, TV, too much caffeine, too much exercise (also known as overtraining) we are open to these things everyday!

Now you can see that our Adrenals are taking a battering everyday and this can lead to adrenal fatigue. Basically they are not functioning as they should and this can play havoc with pretty much everything in the body. Now you can see why it is so important to keep these as healthy as you can!

If you ever looked at any point in your life where you gained quite a bit of weight, especially around the belly! I can guarantee you that there was some sort of body stress taking place. Maybe an injury? Pregnancy? Stressful situation? Even some foods we eat (some of them are “healthy”) can cause inflammation, which is stressful to the body and the adrenals have to react and deal with the new stress and release cortisol to reduce these.

Okay so cortisol does not sound too bad right? Only problem is when we go through periods where our cortisol levels are high it starts having the reverse effect of everything it is supposed to do!

Here is a list of what may start to happen;

  • Joints and muscles become inflamed
    • We become very susceptible to new allergies
    • Loss of memory and brain fog (decreased oxygen to the brain
    • Lowered Immune System
    • Symptoms of Asthma
    • Insomnia
    • BELLY FAT!! (Insulin Resistant)

Similar to the list at the start of the article right!?

You see that long periods of cortisol in the body can have massive destructive effects on our metabolism and fat storage. Our metabolic rate and gut bacteria can be so badly damaged from high cortisol levels that trying to lose weight can become near impossible for some or very difficult! So what do we do? We cut calories too low, but if we stay too low for a long period of time we damage the metabolic rate further! Vicious cycle right!!

Since Cortisol is the stress hormone, it just wants to ensure we survive. So it adds extra protection to the internal organs. What is this protection? FAT! Belly fat accumulates to protect the internal organs! Trying to rid ourselves of this stubborn fat can be incredibly difficult if our cortisol levels are high!!

So what do we do, because it sounds like we are F***ed!

What happens when people diagnose stress they say we have to lower stress?! DUH! We need to look at the bigger picture and realise what part of our body is under stress? This case it is the adrenals! The gland responsible for the stress hormone itself. We need to look at the source to start making a difference!

Start implementing some of these solutions into our lifestyles and you will make change for the positive and your adrenal will thank you…as well as your entire physical and mental wellbeing

  • Lower inflammatory foods and improve gut bacteria (will talk about that below)
  • Increase Fat intake (saturated fat in particular!)
    • Exercise 3 times a week(full body in particular to increase growth hormone)
    • Also make sure you are not over exercising (rest)
    • Sleep
    • Intermittent Fasting- https://medium.com/@aliduggie94/i-started-intermittent-fasting-why-i-am-never-going-back-3d7eceaea5b1
    • Vitamin D
    • Going for a walk
    • Increase Potassium intake
    • Increase Magnesium intake
    • Increase B1, B5

Doing all of these or some of these will have a profound effect on lowering cortisol and take you well on your way to healing your adrenals.

The food industry is really corrupt! There I said it! When some of our mainstream research and guidelines are being funded by companies like Coca Cola and McDonalds it has to make you question how reliable is this information. Coca Cola recently said that diet is not the main contributor to obesity and we need to just exercise? BULLSHIT!! They are saying it’s okay to have sugar in childrens diet?! BULLSHIT! I am literally going nuts writing this!

Saturated fat fear began in the 1950’s by a man called Ancel Keys (pr**k) after his study into the effects of saturated on heart disease.

His study took place in 22 countries with the goal of seeing the correlation of heart disease and saturated fats. Problem is he only published his results of 7 countries in favour of this thesis! When we look deeper at the other countries we realise that countries with higher amounts of saturated fats from healthy sources actually had less risk of heart disease! Amazing!

So what came after was a was 50 years of low fat diets. What got increased? Yep, you guessed it sugar, and now we are in the biggest obesity epidemic ever with diseases like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia and so many more at record levels! These are all caused my poor functioning mitochondria due to increased inflammation in the cells (which I will do a separate blog post on)

Just goes to show what someone with a little influence and on a little cheeky payroll from certain food companies can do!

Some of this research into gut bacteria and its effects into the brain and the mitochondria in the body is cutting edge and only a few years over! I really believe if we changed our eating habits to focus around cell health and brain function we really could change our world and eradicate many terrible diseases and have a huge affects on diabetes and obesity! Imagine the money the country (UK) could save on the NHS (and other health services around the world) with lowered obesity rates!

I can personally say that I have personally follow this lifestyle and my life has changed for the better in every area! Check out my other article here- https://medium.com/@aliduggie94/i-started-intermittent-fasting-why-i-am-never-going-back-3d7eceaea5b1

I hope this brings value to someone and changes their life as much as it did for me!
