Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Napoleon Hill!
Do these names ring a bell to your ears?
Well, to me, they sure DO!
I mean, hello!!! I think every part of the world knows their names.
Why not? Their names will probably be etched forever in history because of their significant success and influence in the world.
It would probably be awesome to rub elbows with them if they’re still alive.
But, hey! I think it would be more awesome if you can be like them, right?
Yea, yea, you’re probably saying this right now, “That’s impossible. Henry Ford built an automotive empire. Edison invented the light bulb. Hill wrote one of the best books about success in history. While here I am, stuck in my 9–5 boring job that sucks the life out of me. How can I be like them? Agh, just impossible.”
If that thought didn’t cross your mind, then, you are one of the positive people in the world. Yay!
I admit this crossed my mind too. I was so intimidated by the success of everyone and asked myself, “Who am I to be successful?”
But then, the inner voice responded to me, WHO ARE YOU NOT TO? That’s the same response you should hear from yourself too.
What if I tell you that you can be like them? I mean, you don’t need to replicate exactly what they have discovered or invented, but you can be AS SUCCESSFUL LIKE THEM.
The good news is, they actually recorded their secrets before they bid the world goodbye.
I was so ecstatic when I bumped into this discovery and it didn’t stop from nudging me ever since. It feels like the spirit of these people surround me and want me to be part of their community.
I kid you not! Ever since I got hold of this information, I have been nonstop in seeking for ways to be like them.
There are nights that I feel they are talking to me and convincing me that I am one of them. I would wake up early morning as if they are real and feel the energy that I’m on the same ladder like them.
It’s a very surreal experience that I have never felt before.
So what is this secret? Did I get a potion or ask somebody to bring them to life to tell me their secrets?
It’s all in ONE BOOK!
Some of you might have probably read it. But in case you have not, I tell you, it will change you!
ONLY IF YOU WANT TO.
Napoleon Hill authored a book that (I think) is only one of its kind. Why, you might ask?
He spent 25 years of research and observed thousands of people in order to turn this book into print. He observed and studied more than 500 men of great wealth and most of the prominent people in history that you can think of: Thomas Edison, George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Abraham Lincoln, his own son and the list just goes on and on.
The book is entitled, Think and Grow Rich, and it is extremely powerful and wakes you up from a long slumber to convince you that you have a GREAT POTENTIAL TO SUCCEED.
And you actually can succeed!
People always associate successful individuals with luck, but it is a big misconception. I have read and heard (I’m sure you did too) many stories of people who succeed in life — from rags to riches, from unknown to famous and so on.
Here’s a very short story for you!
There’s a man who badly wants to work with a great author of his time. He thinks about ways on how he could get his attention and plans to put them into actions very soon. However, there seems to be a problem. The author he admires is very far from him and he is too broke to even afford a plane ticket.
He thought of forgetting his ambition but he felt he has to pursue it. He said, “I really need to see Mr. Awesome and work WITH him.” With the few cash he got, he flew and mastered up the courage to face the great author. When he was at his office, he got turned down right away.
This poor man dropped his shoulders and decided to call it over (that’s what you will probably think), but he did the opposite thing. He came back to the author’s office the next day and asked him again. The great author saw the burning desire on his eyes and gave him the job. But the job was not the kind of job he wanted. It was like one of the lowest level in that office.
He patiently worked on it over the years. He didn’t get what he wanted when he went there which is to work WITH the great author and not to work FOR him. However, his spirit did not retreat. In his mind, he is already working WITH the great author. Even though everyone considered his job as a menial work, he gave his best because of his desire that someday he will be able to work with him.
Fast forward, his desire did not change. The great author saw his passion and determination through the years. His desire radiated around him. That’s when the great author asked him to collaborate. He was able to work with him and create a masterpiece that everyone knows. He ended up as a multimillionaire.
Well, this story is my adaptation of the story in the book. The real story is actually about Mr. Thomas Edison and his best partner.
The very first lesson that I have learned from this book is the power that binds all of these prominent people. The lesson where most of their lives circulated and made them who they are right now.
The power that made them excel — the power of BURNING DESIRE. And that is what this post is all about. To inspire you to achieve that power to step up your life and chase success the way I decided to.
These successful people all underwent failures and rejection. Yet, their spirit and mind pushed them to move forward and achieve what they really want.
Once they put their mind into it, they do everything they can to meet that goal.
That’s why we have automobiles, telephones, light bulbs, bridges and other technological advancements because of these people who may or may not have formal schooling, yet have that desire within them to create something.
Small success fueled by DESIRE!
While I’m reading the book, I reflected on my life and the moments when I had the intense desire to achieve something and the kind of character I had. These are simple moments but as I look back, I realized the power of burning desire is true.
I can still recall about my desire to win a dance contest for the students I was teaching. We have annual pop dance competition during the intramurals. On my first year of teaching, we landed 2nd place and I saw how happy my students were. But then I heard some comments from them wishing that they should’ve won the first place. From that point forward, I badly desired to win the 1st place the next year.
As the competition approaches, I plan about my choreography, spills and props. I literally dream about it at night, like an obsession to win. I think of ways on how to make our presentation unique. I talk to my students during practice that they have to give their best to win. I ask them every day what they want to achieve in the competition. We all developed the same desire that we have to give our best and be on the top.
My students saw my desire and how badly I want to win. I badly want to win because I want them to remember that particular moment in their lives where they became winners. For three consecutive years, my class became the champion for the pop dance competition. I taught three different classes — different individuals and different personalities, but fueled by the same BURNING DESIRE TO BE THE CHAMPION. These are second grade level students, and my desire to win resonated to them. It was good while it lasted because I quit teaching after 4 years to be with my husband.
So the question is,
Can I really be SUCCESSFUL?
Of course, all of us have the potential to succeed.
Napoleon Hill started his book by convincing readers about the power of BURNING DESIRE. This is how you could make it work in your favor.
1.You have to DESIRE something.
You have to know what you really want. When I say want, something that you are willing to put blood and sweat to get it. Something that motivates you every day to achieve it. Something that you see yourself someday being proud of.
Let me cite one powerful quote lifted directly from Hill’s book and uttered by respectable, Mr. Thomas Edison:
“When a man really desires a thing so deeply that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single turn of the wheel in order to get it, HE IS SURE TO WIN.”
2. Be CLEAR on what you desire.
It is easy to say that I want to be successful. But in what ways? You have to be clear and exact as to what your heart really desires.
You can say I want to be a successful sports analyst but that is too broad. Instead, you can say I want to be a successful basketball analyst. Just DEFINE it.
3. Set up a TIMELINE on when you should meet that desire.
Why do people love to procrastinate? Because it compels them to do something and finish the assigned task. When they try to meet deadline, they are forced to work on it and they condition their minds that they have to finish it because there is only limited time.
I don’t urge you to be a procrastinator. My point is, if you have a specific time frame on when you should achieve your dream or goal, you are being motivated to act on it.
If you have a target timeline, it will remind you to make use of your time wisely.
4. Create your PLAN OF ACTIONS.
One of the great things I have learned when I was still teaching is to create plan of actions. Yes, you have objectives set, but you also need to have a blueprint of how to achieve it.
Successful people always have plans ready. These plans will sometimes fail but it is better than not having plans at all.
Write down your plans step by step. Write the ways on how you could achieve it. Be clear and identify the ways that you are willing to do to get what you desire. It doesn’t matter if it is possible. You’ll find out along the way.
As you become motivated to get it, the steps will be unveiled to you unconsciously. Make sure you don’t hurt anybody in trying to get your desires.
For instance, you want to be a successful wedding photographer (remember, be clear), you need to take classes, watch tutorials, take tons of practice and create short-term goals that will lead toward your huge desire.
Remember that the Bible also reminds us of how important planning is: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” (Luke 14:28)
5. DECLARE your desire everyday.
Write down in the form of statement all your answers from 1–4 and read it aloud daily. When you hear it aloud, you are convincing yourself to take actions. You become DREAM CONSCIOUS. It reminds you that you have a dream to fulfill.
I have many powerful testimonies on the power of declaration. One of which is my love story with my husband but that would be a separate post.
The Bible is also very clear on the power of declarations.
James 3:3–5: When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
6. PRAY about what you desire.
This is my addition to the list. I believe that nothing beats the power of prayer. I have desired something since I was in high school that I became so obsessed to it. I prayed about it every day, and I asked God about it. I got my prayer six years later and it is BETTER than what I desired.
God wants us to approach him like a daughter approaches her father. I constantly reminded him about my list and I’m glad He gave it to me.
This verse shows how powerful prayers are:
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:14–15)
This plan does not mean you will not experience failures or challenges, but it would help you develop the spirit to challenge yourself. It will help you to have that obsession to chase your dreams.
Remember when we are obsessed of something, we like to devote our time to it. Just like a tv series, a make up line, shopping spree or a new hobby. We just have to be consistent.
Henry Ford badly desired to have horseless carriage and we all know who he is now. Barbara Corcoran had a burning desire to succeed on her company despite starting from scratch again. She is now one of the Shark Tanks. Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times, yet, we all benefit from his light bulb. Their success stories all started with a BURNING DESIRE and also the rest of the prominent people we know right now. They desired something and took necessary actions to achieve them.
I may not be a multibillionaire (YET, lol), but I try to constantly learn and study the habits of successful people. After reading this book, I have read numerous books that forced me to take actions and apply what I have learned. That is why I like to share them with people because not everyone has the spare time to open a book, research or watch documentaries.
If you think I’m foolish for sharing this to you, well, just go on. My associates (Henry Ford and the like) were also called foolish when people found out what they want to do. It just gives me more reasons to strive to where I want to be.
My good friend, Napoleon Hill, said:
This is just one of the principles highlighted in the book. We will spend months or years talking about the rest. I suggest you get hold of that book if you are tired of being a mediocre.
I also like to look for principles from the Bible because I highly believe that God’s intervention is needed in order to accomplish what we desire.
As a challenge to myself, I set up a short goal to accomplish before May ends. I will apply these principles, and I encourage you to do the same. Start small until you develop that habit to light up that BURNING DESIRE inside you.
Are you going to light up that DESIRE in you?
Well, YOU SHOULD!
If you enjoyed reading this, please share it with friends. Let’s walk together to achieve our dreams.
I know I WILL.
